Tropical plains of South America, being frequent in the Amazon Basin.

The suppression of habitat and high consumption of natural resources compromises the distribution of these animals, some of which are already found in populated areas and prey on domestic animals such as dogs and calves in rural areas.

This species is a semi-aquatic snake and lives associated with water bodies with little movement.

The sexual maturity of these individuals occurs at approximately 4 years of age. Mating occurs annually in the dry season, the gestation lasts about 7 months, and can generate 20 to 40 pups per litter. The puppies are born fully developed and are independent.
